As an American who values liberty, and ensuring free and fair elections I believe in a government that is limited, accountable, and respectful of individual rights. And part of that responsibility is ensuring that every lawful vote counts, and that no illegitimate vote cancels out the voice of a citizen.
Supporting voter ID laws is not about creating barriers. It’s about maintaining the integrity of our elections in the least intrusive way possible. A simple, universally available photo ID, something most people already use to drive, to open a bank account, or to pick up a package, is a minimal requirement that helps protect one of our most fundamental civic rights.
But let me be clear: any voter ID law must be crafted with liberty in mind. It must be easy, fast, and free to obtain an ID. It must accept a broad range of identification, driver’s licenses, state IDs, tribal IDs, student IDs, and more, so that no eligible voter is turned away because of bureaucracy.
When done correctly, voter ID is not a tool of exclusion; it is a safeguard that strengthens confidence in our elections without expanding the power of the state.
Protecting the vote and protecting individual freedom are not opposing goals. With a simple, reasonable ID requirement, we can uphold both.

In too many Chicago communities, casting a vote is harder than it should be.
Some neighborhoods deal with longer lines, fewer polling places, and voting sites that aren’t fully accessible. In parts of our city, voters—especially seniors, people with disabilities, working families, and communities of color—wait significantly longer just to exercise a basic right. And when polling places close or consolidate, the burden falls heaviest on those who can’t take hours off work or travel across town just to vote.

These aren’t small inconveniences—they’re barriers.
Barriers that silence voices. Barriers that weaken our democracy. Barriers that make some Chicagoans feel like the system isn’t built for them.

But we can fix this.
We can expand the number of voting sites so every neighborhood has real access. We can modernize and make every polling place fully ADA-compliant so no one is forced to struggle just to get inside. We can improve early voting options and reduce wait times by investing in the staffing and resources our elections actually need. And we can protect vulnerable voters—like those experiencing homelessness—by strengthening outreach and removing unnecessary obstacles.

The right to vote should be equal everywhere in Chicago.
And as a city, we should commit to a simple promise:
No matter your ZIP code, your mobility, your race, or your income—your vote counts, and casting it should be easy, dignified, and fair.
